While browsing the bookstore 19-year-old Gwen is unexpectedly drawn to a volume of kinky erotica, earning her disapproving glares from the other customers. Will Gwen follow her deepest desires or will she let her embarrassment restrain her?
We were approached by our colleagues at Studio Pupil to help them out with animating the books and the compositing of their animated short Tabook.
Combining 2D animation with 3D animation and make it all work inside the miniature backgrounds was quite a challenge. 2D animation can feel really flat when you place it in a three-dimensional space. To give the 2D characters more depth we used the individual animated elements to create shadows and highlights. This is a very effective technique that we often use in our own compositing work, mainly because you don’t need to animate the shadows and highlights by hand which is a huge timesaver.
Check out this breakdown of our compositing process for this great film.
